WHAT IS THE HORSE ISLAND YACHT CLUB?
Noticed around town lately are caps embroidered with a black horse and a red “I” added on top. Naturally, curious folks have wondered and asked what that stood for. It’s the official burgee (pennant) of the Horse Island Yacht Club. (There actually is a Horse Island, a very small island shown on the chart just south of Carrot Island across Taylors Creek from downtown Beaufort.)
To have the pleasure of belonging to the Horse Island Yacht Club, a person must be a contributing (tax deductible) sponsor of the Beaufort National Boat Building Challenge. Actually, there is no physical yacht club, no officers, no meetings, no dues, no nothing that is normally associated with a functioning club. The Club is rather a state of mind. The embroidered cap is given to qualifying sponsors whether they like it or not, and the sponsors are automatically members. What more fun way is there to help raise money for a charitable cause than to become a yacht club member in the process.
