Our 2010 Judges

Mark Bain
Charleston,SC 

Mark is a premier wooden boat builder, fashioning both large sailing and sportfishing vessels.  In the Charleston SC area, his signal achievement was as shipwright of the tall ship “Spirit of South Carolina”  built and launched in Charleston.  He has been a many-time competitor in the Boatbuilding Challenge and has been the world record holder several times.  We are fortunate to have Mark in Beaufort to be a judge!

CA "B" Coleman
Lexington, KY

An Architect by profession but a marine architect by passion, “B” hails from Lexington, KY and has been a strong supporter of the Challenge competition in recent years. “B” designed the Georgetown Bateau, the second of the competition designs and then again this year with the Carolina Bateau.  He has also drawn up winning cruising yacht designs.

Charlie Ellin
Norfolk, VA

Charlie is a retired Naval Engineering Officer currently working in ship life cycle maintenance and modernization.  A skilled kayaker and Lead Guide for Wild River Outfitters Touring Company, he has built paddle and rowing craft including a touring kayak, canoe and a skiff using lines from a rowing skiff at the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort.  Charlie coordinates and runs the Tidewater Virginia area “Sikaflex Challenge Ultimate Build-A-Boat Contest” (formerly the Quick-and-Dirty Boat Building Contest); a 2 day build, outfit and race event now in its 15th year that is held during Norfolk Virginia’s Harborfest.

 

Tom Lathrop
Oriental

Tom retired  from  electrical engineering in Greensboro,  and became an instant Oriental resident  because of his love for boating. Tom was a champion windmill sailor in his athletic years and has designed and built cruising yachts.  

Corey McMahon
Beaufort

Corey competed in Beaufort’s first Challenge.  He later suffered a back injury (so he told us), keeping us out o the competition, but we were able to take advantage of his brain instead of his brawn.  Owner of Triton Marine, a full service boat yard, he brings a talented eye to the
